A salamander is a kind of animal called an amphibian. Most amphibians live part of their lives in water and part on land.

There are alot of different species of salamanders found in the United States and Canada. Most salamanders are no longer than your hand. Salamanders are divided into two main groups; aquatic and terrestrial.

Aquatic Salamanders live mainly in water. They can be found in shallow streams. They hide during the day and come out at night. They eat tadpoles, small fish and other salamanders.

Terrestrial salamanders live mainly on land. They live in moist areas, under logs, rocks and in caves. They eat earthworms, insects, snails and small mice.
